USPTO Trademark Fees Increased in January 2025: Here’s What You Need to Know
On January 18, 2025, the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) implemented a new trademark fee schedule. These changes were designed to promote more accurate filings and reduce examination delays—but they also came with a noticeable price increase for applicants.
What Changed:
🔹 Filing Fee Increased from $250 to $350 Per Class
The USPTO eliminated the previous TEAS Plus and TEAS Standard options and replaced them with a single base filing fee of $350 per class for applications filed under Sections 1 and 44.
🔹 $100 Fee for Incomplete Applications
If an application omits required information—like the applicant's domicile address or legal entity type—the USPTO now charges an additional $100 per class.
🔹 Fees for Custom Descriptions of Goods/Services
Applications that use custom goods/services identifications (instead of selecting from the USPTO ID Manual) incur a $200 fee per class, plus an additional $200 per 1,000 characters over the first 1,000 characters.
🔹 Maintenance Filing Fees Also Increased
Section 8 Declaration of Use: Increased from $225 to $325 per class
Section 9 Renewal: Increased from $300 to $325 per class
Why This Matters:
If you plan to file for trademark protection, it’s more important than ever to:
✅ Use accurate and complete information in your application
✅ Utilize the USPTO’s ID Manual to avoid additional custom language fees
✅ Budget for these increased fees, especially if you’re filing in multiple classes
